Interactive Workshop on Traffic Safety

Posted by saloni 2016-01-05

In India traffic situation is a deplorable one. With one accident every minute India tops the world in highest number of accident related deaths. It is not only difficult to drive in India, it is dangerous for the pedestrians as people do not follow rules most of the time and might not stop in order to let a pedestrian cross the road.

I realized that drivers of cars, scooters and cycles will have to un-learn first, and then try to learn the legitimate way of driving or riding their vehicles I came up with an idea that if the children are educated in the traffic rules and the dangers of driving rashly, they can in turn educate their parents on the same. Most of the time parents listen to what their children have to say. They may or may not listen to the authorities or other elders.

In order to educate the children I came up with some ideas and we managed to put these ideas in coloring books for children. These books, printed in Hindi, English and German, had an unfavorable situation on one page and the consecutive favorable situation on the same page once you open the flap.

I held a workshop using these books with children from Bagiya. I gave an introduction and we discussed the current traffic situation in India and why and how it sheould be improved. Then each child had to select one situation from the book, color it and then make a presentation on that situation. The children came up with beautiful ideas and were able to explain the situations very well. They colored the pages so well! It was a great way of teaching them the basic traffic rules and showed them the dangers of driving badly! They went home with the books and with a promise that they will explain these dangers to their parents for sure!

Hoping that parents will start contributing in that.

While these numbers are small in a country of 1.2 B people but loss of a life is a calamity for the family. Let us make India a country where no one loses life or a limb in a road accident. Teaching children is the right step, they will go home and educate the parents. They will force parents to no ride a scooter without a helmut, they will not let friends extend their hands out the windows in school bus and so on. Let us create this awareness in schools.
