I have been learning Kathak for the past eight years. During this journey I have not only learnt the dance as a skill but it has helped me to become a better person. The hidden and intrinsic values of discipline, practice and concentration has brought out the best in me. Kathak is a way of life and has helped me remain connected to my roots.
I have been volunteering with an NGO called Bagiya which runs a school for underprivileged children. I decided to put my skill to a better use and take it to an entirely different level. I decided to teach these kids Kathak.
I have been teaching them the dance for the past few weeks now. My journey has been very exciting and fruitful all along.
When I started teaching them, it was a bit difficult in the beginning. They had to get used to the Kathak jargon and learn the steps and movements. Kathak is a very technical dance and one has to practice it like mathematics in order to master it. But I was amazed at their enthusiasm and passion to learn. Within no time they had picked up the steps and were dancing their way to success. Slowly and slowly they developed grace in their movements too.
Their passion is shown in the way they look forward to every class and even ask for extra hour to practice more. Every day they come back and tell me on their own how much they had practiced at home. A dimly lit basement and limited resources haven?t deterred their dreams to take wings! Their dream to dance on a bigger stage one day!
