When Gungharoos Speak....

Posted by saloni 2016-01-04

I have been learning Kathak for the past eight years. During this journey I have not only learnt the dance as a skill but it has helped me to become a better person.  The hidden and intrinsic values of discipline, practice and concentration has brought out the best in me.  Kathak is a way of life and has helped me  remain connected to my roots.

I have been volunteering with an NGO called Bagiya which runs a school for underprivileged children. I decided to put my skill to a better use and take it to an entirely different level. I decided to teach these kids Kathak.

I have been teaching them the dance for the past few weeks now. My journey has been very exciting and fruitful all along.

When I started teaching them, it was a bit difficult in the beginning. They had to get used to the Kathak jargon and learn the steps and movements. Kathak is a very technical dance and one has to practice it like mathematics in order to master it. But I was amazed at their enthusiasm and passion to learn. Within no time they had picked up the steps and were dancing their way to success. Slowly and slowly they developed grace in their movements too.

Their passion is shown in the way they look forward to every class and even ask for extra hour to practice more. Every day they come back and tell me on their own how much they had practiced at home. A dimly lit basement and limited resources haven?t deterred their dreams to take wings! Their dream to dance on a bigger stage one day!

Congratulations Saloni. Amazing efforts I must say. It needs one to be really passionate to go out and reach to people and teach them skills. All the best.

The children of Bagiya are gradually approaching their first Kathak performance on 30th January. As the days pass by, their excitement to set foot on the stage grows exponentially. Teaching them for the past few months, I have become extremely close to each and every student. I learnt that these girls have many responsibilities (household work, taking care of siblings) tofulfil because of their families? economic disadvantages. I commend them for not losing hope in their futures and continuing in their struggle towards improving their condition. Teaching a dance so technical as Kathak, striving for perfection has been an uphill battle. However the persistence and enthusiasm from the girls' side has made the process enjoyable. Practice surely makes perfect and in the process of the preparations the girls aim to enthral the audiences by showcasing their talent! I am also excited !!!!

My friends from Bagia danced well! It was a great experience for them as well as for me. The whole hall was charged up and everyone rejoiced watching them dance. Everyone appreciated them that their dance was graceful and perfect. The best part for me was that the children were so happy and satisfied that they were able to put up the best show! I am grateful to Shilpa Sonal ma’am to give me the opportunity of hosting the show and introducing our esteemed guest of honor Padamshri Smt Geeta Mahalik, a great Odissi dancer. We are on the Bagiya facebook page as well..... https://www.facebook.com/groups/bagiya/
